The first useful decision at Varanasi Airport happens before you reach the taxi queue: establish exactly where you are going. A hotel described as being near the Ganga may have its reception inside a pedestrian lane, while a Sarnath stay lies in a different direction from the Old City. A little preparation here makes the first hour in Varanasi considerably easier.

This guide covers the airport arrival itself, from finding your bags to meeting your driver. Detailed destination journeys sit in the linked route guides, so you can plan the terminal and the onward transfer separately.

Know the airport on your ticket

Varanasi is served by Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, commonly called Babatpur Airport. Its three-letter airport code is VNS. The Airports Authority of India places it at Babatpur, outside the central riverfront neighbourhoods. Do not confuse an airport hotel address with a hotel beside Kashi Vishwanath Temple: they create very different arrival plans.

Air India's airport information currently describes one terminal. Follow the signs and your airline's instructions for your actual flight rather than searching for a terminal arrangement remembered from another airport. An aircraft may use a boarding bridge or another arrival arrangement; neither determines how quickly your baggage will appear.

Keep the flight number, travel date, airline booking reference and accommodation address accessible offline. If someone is collecting you, share the flight number rather than only the scheduled landing time. The person meeting you needs to follow the actual flight, then allow for the time between touchdown and your reaching the public arrivals area.

For an international arrival, allow additional time for the formalities applicable to your journey. A domestic arrival estimate should not be reused as a promise for immigration, customs or baggage clearance. If you have a connecting flight, use the airline's instructions for that booking rather than a sightseeing transfer calculation.

Move through arrivals in a sensible order

After leaving the aircraft, follow arrival signs and identify the baggage belt from the flight display. Check the luggage tag before lifting a similar-looking suitcase. Count your bags while still beside the belt, including a stroller, mobility aid or separately delivered item, and keep the baggage receipt until the handover is complete.

If checked baggage is missing or damaged, speak to your airline's baggage representative before leaving the relevant arrival area. Obtain the written reference and understand the next contact step. A misplaced phone in a terminal seating area is a different matter from a suitcase that did not arrive on your flight; describe where the loss occurred so staff can direct you correctly.

Use the toilet, organise a drink if needed and check your phone charge before calling a driver to the pickup point. These small tasks are easier before the road journey starts. They are particularly useful when your destination includes an additional walk through the Old City.

Once outside the controlled arrival area, stop somewhere permitted to organise the group. One person can contact the driver while another stays with the luggage. Avoid sending children or an older relative ahead to look for the car. Meeting the correct vehicle together is usually quicker than reconstructing a scattered group.

Understand the facilities that are actually listed

Air India's VNS passenger page lists dining, free Wi-Fi, ATMs, charging points, a lounge, wheelchair assistance and a 24-hour medical facility. These are published facility references, reviewed for this guide on 31 October 2026. They do not establish that every service is beside your arrival exit or available to every passenger without conditions.

Book mobility assistance with the airline early and describe the help required. A passenger who can walk a short distance but cannot manage stairs has different needs from someone who requires support throughout the airport. Tell your onward driver separately; an airline assistance request does not automatically arrange accessible transport or hotel assistance.

Do not build an arrival around unverified conveniences such as guaranteed luggage storage, a shower, a staffed tourist desk at all hours or a particular SIM-card counter. If one of these is essential, obtain current confirmation before the flight. A facility list is most useful when it helps you ask a precise question.

Meet a taxi without rushing the handover

AAI's booking information lists a prepaid taxi booth in the arrival visitor's concourse, an Ola service listing and maxi-cab services in the arrival area. These are useful starting points for locating authorised arrangements. Follow current airport signage and staff directions if the operating position has changed.

A prepaid counter, an app ride and a hotel-arranged vehicle involve different payment and meeting procedures. At a counter, establish the destination and retain the receipt. With an app, match the vehicle registration and driver details in your booking. With a hotel transfer, obtain the driver's details and a clear meeting instruction from the property.

Keep the final accommodation address ready, including the neighbourhood and any lane reference. Saying only “Vishwanath” or “ghat hotel” leaves too much unresolved. Ask whether the quotation ends at a road drop-off or includes a staff member meeting you for the remaining approach.

The airport taxi guide explains fare comparisons, waiting charges and booking checks in greater detail. At the terminal, the immediate priority is simpler: identify the right car, confirm the agreed destination, load every bag and check that the group is seated before departure.

Plan the next journey around its real endpoint

Kashi Vishwanath, Godowlia, Dashashwamedh, Assi and Sarnath are not interchangeable airport destinations. Even two hotels advertised as central can require different road approaches. Share the property's own arrival instruction with the driver instead of assuming that the most prominent landmark is also the reception entrance.

For an Old City stay, the journey may finish with walking after a permitted vehicle drop-off. Ask the hotel to name the meeting landmark and explain who will help with suitcases. The airport-to-Godowlia guide is useful for this handover, while the temple transfer guide covers preparation before darshan.

Assi-side accommodation needs its own lane-level check. Some addresses are reached from a road, others through a narrower approach. For a direct journey towards Buddhist monuments, use the airport-to-Sarnath guide; museum visiting hours matter more there than evening riverfront traffic.

Treat any driving duration as an estimate for the road portion. It excludes baggage collection, finding the vehicle, a hotel reception handover and time spent walking to your destination. On a first visit, a flexible first afternoon is more practical than several prepaid appointments immediately after landing.

Deal with delays, luggage and late arrivals

Before departure, ask a booked driver how waiting is calculated. Does it begin at scheduled arrival, actual landing or the agreed pickup time? Is airport parking included? An answer in writing is especially helpful when a delayed flight arrives after the original collection window.

Tell the hotel about a late arrival and confirm that somebody will be available to receive you. This is particularly important for accommodation reached through lanes. Obtain an alternative contact in case the first phone is unanswered, and save the meeting instruction as a screenshot rather than relying on a message that requires a fresh internet connection.

Choose a vehicle for people and luggage together. A car with enough passenger seats may not accommodate several large suitcases with the boot closed. Mention a folded wheelchair, stroller or oversized bag at booking, and ask for the actual vehicle category rather than an ambiguous assurance that a “big car” will come.

If everyone is tired, go to the accommodation first. Depositing luggage, eating and resting can improve the rest of the visit far more than adding an immediate detour. An arrival day does not need to prove how many sights can fit between the airport and dinner.

Prepare now for an easier departure

Before leaving the airport, note how your airline wants you to report for the return flight. Domestic and international journeys can have different requirements, and special assistance or checked baggage may affect preparation. Use the airline's current instruction for your booking rather than a universal arrival-before-flight rule.

For a riverfront hotel, ask about departure luggage assistance at check-in. The road pickup may be some distance from reception, and an early flight requires the porter or staff member to be available before ordinary breakfast service. Confirm both the hotel departure time and the car collection time; they may differ.

Keep airport shopping or a meal optional on the return day. The main job is to reach the correct airline check-in area within its reporting window. If the road journey takes longer than expected, a plan with fewer extra tasks is easier to adjust.

Finally, retain the transfer receipt until you have reached the hotel and checked the bags. Put the return driver's contact beside the airline details in one accessible note. That small arrival-day habit removes another decision from the morning you leave Varanasi.

BEFORE YOU GO

Frequently asked questions

What is Varanasi Airport called?

Its official name is Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, with airport code VNS. Babatpur Airport is a commonly used local name referring to its location. Use VNS and the flight number when arranging a pickup so the meeting is tied to the correct airport and arrival.

Does Varanasi Airport have more than one terminal?

Air India's published VNS information currently describes one terminal. Follow your airline's instructions, flight displays and airport signage for the actual journey. Do not assume that a terminal description also guarantees a particular arrival exit or pickup bay.

Can I get a prepaid taxi on arrival?

AAI lists a prepaid taxi booth in the arrival visitor's concourse. Confirm the operating counter and current quotation on arrival, explain the full destination and retain the receipt. A prepaid road transfer does not automatically include luggage assistance through pedestrian lanes.

Is Wi-Fi available at the airport?

Free Wi-Fi is listed in Air India's airport information. Check the current connection process locally and keep essential addresses and booking details available offline. A phone without an active connection should not prevent you from identifying the hotel or agreed driver.

Should I visit a temple straight after landing?

That depends on your actual arrival, luggage and the group's energy. A hotel stop is usually easier when carrying suitcases or travelling with children. If proceeding directly, arrange belongings storage and check current temple entry instructions before committing to a booked worship slot.
